Certified Farmers Markets Fresh Pick of the Week: Apples and Pears, Oh My!
Locally-grown Apples and Pears are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the just-opened Certified Farmers’ Markets. ”People tend to forget California’s Fall harvest of Apples and Pears,” said Paul Palodichuk, General Manager of the valley’s three Certified Farmers’ Markets. “In other parts of the country, the Fall harvest of Apples and Pears is a huge celebration, but in Southern California, Citrus fruits tends to overshadow our Apples and Pears. They shouldn’t, though. Growing Apples and Pears in Southern California is quite a tradition, and there’s nothing quite like taking a bite into a freshly picked apple or pear from one of California’s family-owned orchards. Choose from Gala Apples, Granny Smith Apples, Pink Lady Apples, Fuji Apples, Asian Pears, and a variety of other Pear varieties (Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou).
DID YOU KNOW: California is the fifth largest producer in Apples in the United States, with almost 14,000 acres exclusively in apple production. California is the second largest producer of Pears in the United States, representing 25% of the country’s total Pear production.
Price: $ 2.50 a pound.
