Gaya Melons are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Coachella Valley Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. Gaya Melons are early bearing hybrid melons that were originally developed in Japan, but which have been grown both in Southern California and in Mexico for several years. They have an ivory-colored, thin rind with occasional green streaking that is easy to peel. The interior flesh is white to light green in color, with a moderately sweet taste that is reminiscent of honeydew melon mixed with juicy pear and banana. Gaya Melons keep well, and are great additions to fruit salads.
Did You Know: All melons, including Gaya Melons, are varieties of the Cucurbitaceae or “cucumber family, which also includes squash, gourds and actual cucumbers. All members of this botanical family are technically “fruits,” but melons are the only ones generally considered fruits in culinary terms. All the others are considered vegetables.
