Certified Farmers' Market

Summer Certified Farmers’ Market to screen HBO’s Acclaimed Series THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION, starting July 7th.

The Summer Certified Farmers’ Market will be screening the four part HBO Documentary Series, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION each Saturday morning at 9am, beginning July 7th and continuing through July 28th. The screenings, which are sponsored in part by Kaiser Permanente, are the centerpiece of the Certified Farmers’ Market’s “Salute to Healthy Eating Celebration” which is taking place at the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market throughout the month of July. All screenings will take place inside the the Palm Springs Pavilion at 401 S. Pavilion Way in Palm Springs.

“We chose to screen THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION because obesity has become such a major problem in our country,” said Paul Palodichuk, Certified Farmers’ Market Manager. “Changing to a healthier diet that includes more fruits and vegetables (like those you can find at the Certified Farmers’ Market) can really help in the fight against obesity, and help get people on the road to better health overall.”

HBO’s THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION series tackles the problem of obesity in America head-on, and provides practical, real-world solutions to the problem. It is estimated that obesity is a contributing factor in five of the ten leading causes of death in this country. Three out of ten children and two out of three adults in the United States are overweight, and, as a result, are at increased risk of suffering from type two diabetes, heart disease, cancer and/or stroke. Much of the obesity problem is related to diet – poor eating habits, high fat consumption, not enough fruits, vegetables and fiber, and too much sodium and sugar.

In addition to the screenings of  THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION , the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market’s “Salute to Healthy Eating Celebration” will feature a number of special health-focused booths, information on healthy eating, visiting chefs, Summer fun activities, and, of course the very best in locally-grown, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables, many of which are organic.

“Summer is a great time to get started with a healthier diet,” Palodichuk continued. “And THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION gives people th information they need to do that. This is real information teamed with real-world solutions in an environment designed to help people put the things they are learning into practice immediately.”

About THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION:

THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

The centerpiece of THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION initiative is the four-part documentary series, each featuring case studies, interviews with our nation’s leading experts, and individuals and their families struggling with obesity.  The first film, CONSEQUENCES, examines the scope of the obesity epidemic and explores the serious health consequences of being overweight or obese. The second, CHOICES, offers viewers the skinny on fat, revealing what science has shown about how to lose weight, maintain weight loss and prevent weight gain. The third, CHILDREN IN CRISIS, documents the damage obesity is doing to our nation’s children. Through individual stories, this film describes how the strong forces at work in our society are causing children to consume too many calories and expend too little energy; tackling subjects from school lunches to the decline of physical education, the demise of school recess and the marketing of unhealthy food to children. The fourth film, CHALLENGES, examines the major driving forces causing the obesity epidemic, including agriculture, economics, evolutionary biology, food marketing, racial and socioeconomic disparities, physical inactivity, American food culture, and the strong influence of the food and beverage industry.
