Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the Week: California Macadamia Nuts!
California-grown Macadamia Nuts are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week at the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. And for those of you who thought all Macadamia Nuts came from Hawaii, the growers in and around Fallbrook, California are more than happy to correct your thinking. California Macadamia Nuts, they say, are more flavorful than Hawaiian varieties, and more nutritious as well. That’s because California Macadamia Nuts have a higher oil content. That means a creamier, more luscious flavor, and more monounsaturated fats – fats that can reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. In the end, though, it’s the taste that tells the story, and when you taste these fresh California-grown Macadamia Nuts, you’re sure to become an immediate fan.
Did you know: Macadamia Nuts are native to Australia, and are the only edible nut to originate on that Continent. The first Macadamia Nuts produced outside Australia were grown in Hawaii, but today, Macadamias are grown in South Africa, Brazil, California, Costa Rica, Israel, Kenya, Bolivia, New Zealand, Colombia and Malawi. Australia is currently the world's largest commercial producer of Macadamia Nuts; producing approximately forty per cent of the world’s supply.
