Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers' Markets

Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the Week:
Boysenberries, Olallieberries, and  Blackberries!

Boysenberries, Olallieberries, and  Blackberries are the first Fresh Pick of the Week from the 2013 Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. The Summer Market, which opens inside the Palm Springs Pavilion on Saturday, June 1st, has a variety of fresh, California-grown berries to help valley residents welcome the Summer Season to our valley.

Several varieties of Blackberries can be found at the market, and all of them are descended from their wild perennial cousins, which grow in profusion all over the world in the woods, on the sides of roads, on hillsides, in fields, and in hedgerows. But Blackberries are not only happy to grow and reproduce. They are also happy to participate with other berries in the creation of new, and ever more delicious hybrids. Boysenberries are one such hybrid. A California native, Boysenberries are the result of a hybrid between a European Raspberry, a Common Blackberry, and a Loganberry. Olallieberries are yet another hybrid. They result from a cross between the Loganberry (itself a hybrid between Blackberries and Raspberries) and the Youngberry (a cross between Blackberries, Raspberries and Dewberries). The good news? All these berries are delicious, and nutritious, whether eaten fresh,  added to cereal or fruit salads, made into jams, jellies or preserves, or cooked into pies or cobblers and served with ice cream. Try several to see which one you prefer!

Did You Know:  Boysenberries, Olallieberries, and Blackberries are not true berries, at least in the botanical sense. Rather, they are an aggregate fruit composed of small drupelets. That technicality, however, has had little effect on the many loyal fans of Boysenberries, Olallieberries, and Blackberries – among them - humans, birds, deer, cattle, and a variety of caterpillars.
