Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers' Markets

Fresh Pick of the Week: WATERMELON!

Nothing says Summer like a juicy slice of WATERMELON. And that’s exactly why WATERMELON is this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. WATERMELON is an ancient food that originated in Southern Africa. It spread North (into Egypt) and East (into China) before making its way to Europe, then West into the Americas.

It is no surprise that WATERMELON has maintained its popularity through the ages. It is sweet, delicious, and versatile enough to appear on tables as a salad, a side dish, an entrée, a beverage and/or a dessert.

DID YOU KNOW: Around 200-300 varieties of WATERMELON are grown in the U.S. and Mexico. Typically ovoid or round, most WATERMELONS have the traditional red flesh inside, but at the market you’ll also find WATERMELONS with yellow flesh.
