Locally-grown Jujubes are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers’ Market. Jujubes (not the candy) are also known as Red Dates or Chinese Dates. Ours come from Ha’s Apple Farms, which is located in Tehachapi, California. Each week, David and Kyung Ha, and their family, bring their delicious apples, jellies, jams, dried fruits and Jujubes to the Certified Farmers’ Markets! Their Jujubes have a long history in Asia, where they are thought to have been domesticated as early as 9,000 BCE. Jujubes can be eaten fresh, or dried. They can be candied, smoked, made into vinegar, syrup, tea, and even used to make wine.
Jujubes are a traditional part of Chinese and Korean medicine, and are thought to have the ability to alleviate stress, fight fungal infections, fight bacterial infections, and, when combined with other herbal medicines, can be used to combat colds, flu and chronic constipation.
Did You Know: In addition to their culinary and medicinal properties, in many Asian cultures, Jujubes are associated with romance and fertility. Boys in the high regions of the Himalayas present Jujube blossoms to girls in hopes that they will fall in love with them, and in China, a Jujube is placed, along with other items, in the newlyweds' bedroom as a good luck charm for fertility.
