Fresh-picked Green Beans (or string beans or snap beans) are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers’ Markets. Ours are grown locally and picked at the point of perfection. The ideal green bean should have a firm, fleshy and sweet pod, but also have well-formed beans inside. They should also be tender and have a bright green color.
Although over 130 varieties of Green Beans are grown in the United States, the most popular, by far, is the Blue Lake variety. Blue Lake Green Beans account for the vast majority of Green Beans consumed by Americans. They are a bush bean (meaning they do not have to be staked), and grow well in a variety of climates.
Did You Know: Green Beans contain almost as much of colorful (and healthful) pigments like carotenoids as carrots and tomatoes. The reason we don't see them is because the concentrated chlorophyll content in Green Beans overshadows their colors with shades of green!
Price: $ 3 a pound, and up.
Also in Season, and available now at all locations: Potatoes, Celery, Green Onions, FRESH and DRIED Herbs, Eggs, Dates, Almonds, Oranges, Grapefruit, Chard, Eggplant, Squash, Onions, Garlic, Apples, Shallots, Beets, Green Beans, Carrots, Tomatoes, Green Tomatoes, Peppers, Lettuces, Parsley, Mint, Broccoli, Cabbage, Spinach, Radishes, Leeks, Brussels Sprouts, Asparagus, Cherimoyas, Dates . . . . PLUS, incredible artisan breads, fresh meats, cheese, fresh raw honey, California olives/olive oil/vinegars, and a wide variety of exotic Orchids and flowers.
