Tomatillos are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. Available from several farms, our Tomatillos are all locally-grown and are available in both the familiar green/yellow variety and the less commonly seen purple variety. Many people mistake Tomatillos as a form of tomato, but despite being in the same botanical family as tomatoes – the nightshades - Tomatillos are actually more closely related to Gooseberries. Tomatillos originated in Mexico, and are key ingredients in many Mexican and other Latin American dishes. Green Tomatillos are most often used in fresh or cooked Green Sauces. Purple Tomatillos tend to be slightly sweeter, and, although they are sometimes still used in sauces like their green cousins, they can be also be used for jams, jellies and preserves. All Tomatillos have a papery husk that is inedible and should be removed.
DID YOU KNOW: If you’re hoping to grow your own Tomatillos, be sure to plant several plants. In order to set fruit, two or more plants are needed to ensure proper pollination.
