Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the week: Melons! Melons! Melons!

Cantaloupes, Watermelons, and Honeydew melons
are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers’ Markets. They’re an end of Summer sensation, and offer a delicious start to cooler Autumn weather. These popular edible fruits (yes, they are fruits!) originate mostly in tropical areas, and were among the earliest cultivated plants in both the Old and New Worlds. They are closely related to cucumbers, gourds, squashes and pumpkins (all of which are also to be found in abundance at the markets right now).

Did you know: China, which has been cultivating melons since the Tenth Century, is the world’s single largest producer of melons. It is not, however, the oldest. That honor goes to Egypt, and to residents of the Nile valley, who were already cultivating watermelons in the 2nd millennium BC.

Price: $2 per pound and up
