Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the Week for June 5th, 2009

Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, and Plums, oh my! The season’s first stone fruits are in at the Palm Springs and Palm Desert Certified Farmers’ Markets (The La Quinta Market is closed for the season). Choose from a wide variety of stone fruits (some organic) fresh from the farm(s), including white peaches, yellow peaches, white nectarines, yellow nectarines, several varieties of apricots, and many plum varieties you just won’t see in stores. They’re all fresh picked, and locally-grown.

Did you know: Freestone stone fruits literally have a free stone, meaning the stone or seed kernal is relatively free of the flesh, and can be removed from it with ease. Clingstone stone fruits have a clinging stone, meaning the stone is well attached to the flesh, and cannot easily be removed from it. Clingstone varieties are preferred as table fruit and for jams, because the flesh of clingstone fruits tends to be more tender and juicy throughout.

Price: $2 per pound and up.
