And why not? They are among the oldest human foods (dating back to the Bronze Age), and remain one of the most versatile… Continue

First of the season Sweet Corn!

First of the season Organically-grown Sweet Corn
is a sure sign that Summer is here, and it’s available at the Palm Springs and Palm Desert Certified Farmers’ Markets (The La Quinta Market is closed for the season). Sweet Corn is a Summer picnic staple, and a favorite for its sugary sweet flavor. But get yours fast. Locally-grown (and first of the season) Peaches are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week at all three Certified Farmers’ Market locations. Peaches are an American tradition, growing throughout the continental United States (except in tropical areas). They are perhaps best known for their association with the State of Georgia (Georgia Peaches), but today California and South Carolina join Georgia as the three largest peach producing states in the United States. Peaches are members… Continue

In the heat of the day - Lettuce be wise

Hello Everyone,

It is that famous time of year here in our beloved valley when the temperatures can creep up past 100 degrees just when we get used to maybe, well, 90 degrees. Speaking as a 3rd year veteran of Coachella Valley summers, I was quickly corrected by one of our farmers from Thermal who has lived here most of his life who said, " well, you really don't get used to it, you just accept it, learn to flow with it, and get indoors as much as possible."

So, let's all keep… Continue

Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the week: Summer Squash

Locally-raised fresh Summer Squash is available from several farmers at the market in a variety of shapes and sizes. This versatile fruit (that’s right – although we all think of Squash as a vegetable, it’s technically a fruit!) is one of America’s favorite side dishes, and although we mostly consume the fruit (harvested while the rinds are still tender), every part of the Squash plant is edible… Continue

A GREAT READ

Hi Foodies,

We have been reading a wonderful book given to Paul and I by one of the Farmers, which also has been recommended by many of you as well. We can't seem to put it down, but we do a chapter at a time to relish in the read. It's all so familar. The title is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. It's funny, informative and gives you a true sense of what is going on with our food supply.

Have a great week,… Continue

Spring is here!

While the rest of the country is still shoveling snow and working on finding a small hint of sunlight, we are lucky to have this beautiful temperate climate. Having lived in the midwest and east coast for many years, I can't even imagine wanting to experience the cold again. For me, waking up with sun everyday, allows me to feel ever more grateful and happy, and a happy chef makes extraordinary food.

It is sort of like the routine of shopping for fresh vegetables and produce.… Continue
